Things to know about traumatic brain injuries

On Behalf of | Feb 13, 2025 | Car Accidents

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can stem from a host of situations, such as serious falls or motor vehicle crashes. These injuries can range from concussions to catastrophic injuries, each of which has specific effects.

Anyone who’s in a crash or involved in another similar situation should ensure they’re familiar with these two facts about TBIs.

Direct and indirect injuries are possible

Some TBIs are the result of a direct hit to the head, but that’s not always the case. Indirect brain injuries can occur when a force flings the person’s head around. When this is a violent motion, it can cause the brain to slam against the skull, which can cause damage at the impact points on the brain.

Delayed symptoms are possible

The symptoms of a TBI may not be evident right away after the injury occurs. It’s possible that it may be days or weeks after the incident before the victim experiences things like headaches that don’t get better with treatment or time, mood swings, altered sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating or changes in senses.

Victims of TBIs may need extensive medical care, which can be a costly endeavor. They may opt to pursue a compensation claim to try to offset the expenses related to the injury. This can include lost wages, medical care and other similar damages. These cases can be complex, and they’re subjected to strict time limits, so working with someone familiar with this type of personal injury claim is critical.
